Hello, fellow bookworms!
To be honest, this was a much harder post to write then I anticipated. I actually thought this was going to be an easy one to just throw up there. That I could get it done in a snap. But a couple of things started running through my mind as I started to cultivate the list of books I want to dive in to throughout this year.
First problem: I tend to gravitate towards certain books at certain times. I “feel” like reading a mystery, a fantasy, a (enter genre here). Which means I wind up reading a few books at once but that’s another problem for another day. What made this aspect difficult in making a list was that as soon as I have a reading schedule I have to adhere to, I start to have an aversion to reading. It’s the rebel in me.
First solution: I’m going to put 12 books that I really want to read this year. They are organized in no particular way and they are certainly not restricted to a certain month. There is no “monthly read”. When I’ve made a yearly reading list with a monthly schedule in the past and I haven’t finished before the first of the next month, the perfectionist in me feels as if I’ve failed. And that’s not fun. Reading is supposed to be fun. #duh
Second problem: This revisits problem one slightly but is a problem unto itself. I read more than one book at once. And the reason that bugs me in this case is if I’m going to share what I’m reading, I want to share everything that I’m reading not just the 12 I’ve mandated for myself.
Second solution: Every month I had already decided to do a round-up post. A post of what I’m up to and what I’m watching, eating, loving, and yes, reading. In that post will be all the books I’ve managed to start and probably not finish…cause who am I kidding? AND if you’re a super book nerd like me, you can always follow me on Goodreads.
CAVEATS! (Because there haven’t been enough already)
- On Goodreads, there is a challenge every year. I set my goal last year and this year to 12. One a month. It’s a good reading pace for me.
- I may pick these up in any order over the year. To see what I’m reading then, Goodreads is the place!
- I am continuing or finishing up a couple of series this year. There is a link included for the first book of each series.
- All books are linked for ease of use. None of these are affiliate links.
Now that I’ve laid it all out there, the 12 books of 2019.
One
Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy #2)
&
The Book of Life (All Souls Trilogy #3) by Deborah Harkness
This is a two for one deal because I am already reading Shadow of Night. I started it in 2018 so it felt like cheating to add it by itself. This year, I want to finish up this trilogy. First installment: The Discovery of Witches.
Two
Becoming by Michelle Obama.
This is a no brainer, right? Inspiration from a strong, smart, confident woman? I’m in.
Three
After You (Me Before You #2)
&
Still Me (Me Before You #3) by Jojo Moyes.
I’ve read about half of After You. So this year, I’m finishing it up and knocking out the last book in this series. Paris For One may be on next year’s list. We’ll see…
Four
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer.
Saw the movie on Netflix, fell in love, now we’re here.
Five
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
This classic has been on my list for at least a decade. I love the original movie and with a new rendition coming out (with Emma Watson no less!!) I’m going to dive into this one.
Six
Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas.
The last book in the Throne of Glass series. This series, as well as her other, A Court of Thorns and Roses, are two of my all-time favorite series. The fact that this is the last one has me procrastinating starting it because I definitely don’t want it to end.
Seven
Drums of Autumn (Outlander #4) by Diana Gabaldon.
I read the book series along with the television series. The current season of the television series is this book so I have some catching up to do. If you want to start with the books, Outlander is the first one. If you want to start with the shows, it’s on Starz.
Eight
The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger.
With so many long, hefty novels I wanted to fit in something fun. Ever since I’ve seen the movie, the book has been on my list.
Nine
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks.
Although I’ve seen the movie and read other books of his, I’ve gotta read the one that started it all. Plus, my grandma loved Nicholas Sparks. She would want me to hit them all.
Ten
What Should Be Wild by Julia Fine.
What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good recommendation and a pretty cover.
Eleven
Wonder Woman: Warbringer (DC Icons #1) by Leigh Bardugo
Love Wonder Woman. That’s the first reason. Superheroes? I’m in. That’s the second reason. The third reason is that #3 of DC Icons is by my girl, Sarah J Maas but we’ll get to that one at a later date. This feels like the start of a beautiful friendship.
Twelve
Woman in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey and The Mountain Gorillas of Africa by Farley Mowat
Even as I type the title, it seems unrealistic to me that I’m going to read this one. Not for lack of enthusiasm, mind you. But because I bought my copy of this book IN THE EIGHTH GRADE. I’m now 27. *insert eye roll here* The only other book I’ve had this long that I purchased but have not read is Anna Karenina. Maybe that will make next years list… But back to Woman in the Mists. Ever since my formative middle school years, I have been fascinated by Dian Fossey’s story. Hence, the purchase of the book. It is time this book got it’s due. 2019 is the year!
So there you have it! My 2019 reading list! It’s unconventional, yes. BUT maybe you’ll find in here a book to pick up or a new series to love! Let me know if you wind up reading one of these or just what you’re reading in general. And if you have any good recommendations, throw them my way.
Happy reading!
Psst…check out my last post!

Yay! That’s so exciting! I have less than 100 pages left of Shadow of Night so I have to start Book of Life soon. Did you see that they turned it into a tv series?!

I definitely have to add those to my Goodreads TBR shelf if they aren’t there already. I always end up loving all of your recommendations!
